Happy Happy Joy Joy

Well, that might be overstating it just a tad.  But, I am starting to feel mostly back to normal, and since the last few posts were dwelling on so much woe is me downer type stuff, this post is going to talk about some of the fun things that have happened lately.

And what could be more fun than getting presents!!!  Yep, not only did I get a few rad things last week, but I am passing on the joy of presentsing to you!  (It is too a word).  That’s right . . . if you can make it all the way to the very end of this post, and slog through all the self-congratulatory bullshit joyousness, then you can also feel the heart swelling feeling of being gifted upon.  So, stay tuned!

A few weeks ago, I entered a giveaway contest on another blogger’s site.  It was Mandi‘s birthday and she was giving away some prizes in honor of the festivities.  All you had to do was write a poem or limerick or haiku or something.  Well, of my many gifts and skills, poetry has never been one of them.  So, as much as I love me some Mandi, I basically told her to fuck off with her poetry (with love!).  But, she guilted me into at least trying.  So I did.  Pretty unsuccessfully, I might add.  But, despite my poor efforts at Wordsworthing . . . she ended up just picking names out of a hat (her husband did, actually).  And, since my odds were 1 in 4 . . . I won!!  So, last week I received my bounty.  This is what she sent to me:

It says:  I have a very busy day of being stunning.  Yeah, so obviously this mug was made for me, right?  🙂

Oh, but that’s not all that was in the package.  I also got this kick ass magnet.  And y’all know how much I love me some magnets . . .

Yay, fun side! (Mmmm, pie).

And the flipside:

Mean side, boo!!

So that was definitely a fun treat to get all that good stuff in the mail.  I love mail!!

The next fantastic items I received actually arrived on my husband’s birthday.  Birthday for the hubs = presents for me!  Huzzah!  Really, it’s as it should be, no?

The first was not really a present, since I ordered it myself and was expecting it.  However, based on shipping expectations, I didn’t think I would get it until this week.  I was so very pleasantly surprised that it came so early:

Guys.  I cannot stress this strongly enough:  YOU MUST GET THIS BOOK!!!!!!  This is a hysterical biography!  If you have been living under a rock and don’t know either a) who The Bloggess is, or b) that she wrote a book, then really there might not be any help for you at all.  But . . . if you know all of that (as you should!) and just haven’t gotten around to it or are waiting for the paperback version (that was totally my excuse at first), you must put away all childish thoughts and run to your local B&N/Target or order it immediately from Amazon!!

I have never laughed so hard or as vocally reading any book in my entire life.  And that is really saying something y’all, since I am not only a voracious reader, but was an English Lit major in college.  I have read a lot of books in my life, is basically what I am saying.  And this one gave me cramps in my stomach from laughing so hard and so long.  I got pissed at one point because I was laughing so hard that tears started impeding my vision and I could not read the next sentence, and that really bugged me because I needed to see what on earth she was going to say next!  That is the sign of a good book, y’all.  Read it NOW.

It took me four days to read it, and I probably could have done it in one sitting if I didn’t have silly things like the hubs’ birthday, work, kids, chores . . . basically stupid life holding me back from this brilliance.  (There is a very good reason that I needed to get the book and read it relatively quickly as well, but I’ll get to that in an upcoming post next week).

The next item that I received was not expected, but also arrived on the hubs’ birthday.  This was from my friend and sister wife, Jen, who said she was just thinking of me and decided to send something to brighten my day.  Well, brighten it she surely did.  The first awesomeness was the card:

This is SO Jen.

I mean, really.  Obviously bacon would trump any thoughts of anything else!  But the best part was the gift that came with the card:

Seriously . . . what could be more rad than knee-high bright green socks with the word PORTLAND written all up each side?  And truly, when you think of me, how do you not imagine me wearing these socks?  🙂

When I wrote to Jen to thank her for the gift, I told her that I was starting to envision a huge secret closet in her apartment that was just filled with Portlandia souvenirs and memorabilia that she would hand-pick from and send to her friends when they were feeling down, just to make them smile.  I have to tell you, she did not deny the accusation.  Hmmm, I’m starting to suspect some type of C.S. Lewis wardrobe action happening here, perhaps . . .

And lest you think that I could possibly resist trying on these bad boys . . .you obviously don’t know me.  And for your viewing pleasure . . . my modelling of these fine examples of hosiery:

I would never deny you all of such a brilliant display of sock modelling.  And why yes, I do know how sexy my leg is, but I thank you for noticing, just the same.

Then, of course, there was Mother’s Day, where I received some lovely gifts from my kids/husband.  My oldest actually made this for me in school:

And then there were the gifts:

Love monkey

My oldest purportedly picked out this monkey for me at the mall.  Love it!

Ahhh, now we’re talking!!  How well do my kids (the hubs) know me!!  Mommy drinks cuz you’re bad!  (Kidding kidding . . . mostly).  The only thing missing was the bottle of Tequila.  I’m not really sure what the hubs was thinking.  Except maybe “it’s inappropriate to take your 6 year old to a liquor store to buy booze for his mommy?”  Nah, that can’t be it.

These were fun little things.  Especially that voodoo doll.  Hmmm, I’m thinking that just might come in handy at work!  Who wants me to plan something, again???  :p

This was more a gift from the hubs than from the kids, even though they gave it to me.  It has my birthstone (amethyst) and the stone of the month in which we were married (October . . . not sure what that stone is).  See what I  mean?  If it was more from the kids, I would think it would have their birthstones.  But it is really very pretty.  I have another amethyst necklace I got for my birthday that I haven’t worn yet.  I need to get some amethyst earrings or something, cuz I don’t have anything to match these things.  I don’t even have anything heart-shaped.  Hmmmm . . . . .

And of course this very pretty mini-rose plant that my youngest informs me “we got from Giant.”  Ahh, all the best roses come from Giant!  🙂

So, really, in the last week, I’ve kinda made out.  Both the wonderful gifts from my blogging buds, a fantastic book, and the very generous and thoughtful gifts from my kids/hubs.  I am a very lucky girl.

Hi.  Still there?  Haven’t run away screaming from this super long and incredibly self-involved post yet?  Still waiting for your chance to win something?  Well, here it is!!!

Even though the pic does not do it justice, this is an awesome iPhone cover that looks just like a cassette tape.  What’s a cassette tape you ask?  First, if you are asking that, you are not old enough to be on the internet, so go take a nap and drink your bottle and leave this to the grown-ups.  And second, it was a piece of plastic filled with this film type thing wherein music was imprinted, and you would put it into a player and listen to about 30 minutes or so of music before the tape ended and you would have to eject it, flip it over, and then play the other side for about 30 minutes.  It was truly magical.

If you don’t have an iPhone, this is not going to mean anything to you, obviously, so I have something else for the rest of you:

Basically, you can choose which one you want.  Even if you do have an iPhone and like this notepad better.  If you win, you get to pick the prize.

Ok, so here’s the rules . . . in order to win one of these fab prizes, you must do one (or more than one) of these things:

1.  Like my Facebook page (see all the way up at the top right of this page —^).

2.  Follow my Blog (also up up up top there on the right).

3.  Comment on this post.  But not just any comment . . . I want you to tell me something that has made you happy lately.  Something unexpected that brightened your day.  Based on the comments I received on last week’s post, it seems that I am not the one who is dealing with the blues lately.  But everyone has something that momentarily brightens their outlook for just a brief time.  Even if you do return to the funk afterwards (but hopefully not).  Share what it is that has recently made you smile, even if only for a moment.

I will pick a name in a couple weeks.  Or make my kids do the dirty work for me, as usual.  I mean, what good are they if they can’t take the brunt of all the loser’s ire, right?

Awwwwww….You done hit the mother lode of gifts this week. (Whomever said happiness isn’t in material things hasn’t gotten the right material things…)

    What’s made me happy lately?
    – Moving with Roger into our house
    – My daughter’s H.S. graduation *sniff*
    – My son’s breakup with his ‘bride of satan’ girlfriend
    – Misty finally feeling happier.
    – The Effexor/Xanax combo….

It’s the little things in life, Chiquita!

Here’s to life, love, and roses from Giant!

No kidding. And yes, whoever said money can’t buy happiness has just never had enough money, either.

I love your happy things. Especially the bride of Satan one! 😉

      Here’s to Giant roses, indeed!

You finished the book already? Nice! Stupid studying for my sign language final today has been slowing me down. I’ll have it finished before Sunday though!

    Glad you’re feeling better!

Things that make me happy lately:
    * Tickets! In the last couple weeks, I’ve obtained: a club seat ticket for a Pirates/Orioles game in Baltimore, tickets to see the Pirates/Tigers game in Pittsburgh with a bunch of blogger friends, and tickets to see Van Halen with my 13-year old nephew.

    * Providing timely information to people, like “The birthstone for October is opal.”

    * Seeing something that I’ve written inspire someone to smack a child, or say something pissy to a friend.

    * Discovering new blogs.

    * Winning blog contests, like one for a pad of snappy answers.

Well of course you feel better, how could you NOT with all that swag and green knee-high socks?

Wow! You got a lot of love! I have the bloggess book, I just haven’t had the chance to read it yet, it will be the next on my list.

    Hmm…yeah moments

Hubby offered to drive me to my Mom’s where we could commiserate together on the crappy Saturday that we were having. It’s 2 hours there and 2 hours home and he drove both ways and never once complained. Not even when we got home at 1:30 in the morning. His idea made my weekend so much better!

Dude! I totally forgot. To give you booze when we met on my way across country! Sorry! …actually, I think it was all in the truck anyway.

Happy? Spent the day with Brett yesterday. He is delightfully spontaneous, and when I saw the giant statue + frieze of Lincoln entering Illinois, he totally figured out a way to boost me up and take my picture with Lincoln. He makes me happy!

Oh, and a job interview today.

    • mistyslaws
      May 19, 2012 @ 18:00:59

Yes, I’m sure the lack of booze contributed to my doldrums. Kidding!! But having the booze would have allowed me to at least drown my sorrows. 😉

I am very happy for your happy. Both Brett and the job interview. I hope you get it!

Wowee, you got major gifts! NICE…for Mother’s Day, I got homemade cards and my MIL made her famous ribs. That was enough for me! DId you get a gander at the name of the company that makes those socks? Because I think I’ve seen them before but I can’t remember where.

    What’s making me happy?
    — My chronic pain issues may be going into remission.
    — I just ordered a bunch of used books via Amazon, so they will be trickling in over the next few weeks. BOOKS, YES.
    — My kids are testing this week so minimal homework.
    — I have plans for this Saturday that include fabric shopping.

    Plenty to be delighted about!

I can’t remember the brand name of the socks. Maybe Jen remembers?

That is lots of happy . . . yay for no pain and books!! Sounds like you are having a great week. Huzzah!

    May 16, 2012 @ 14:24:12

Ok, allergy medicine brain here so I will have to give the rest of what I want to write some thought, but those are opals…and no, I do not know why I felt that couldn’t wait for my mind to catch up!

    • mistyslaws
      May 19, 2012 @ 18:04:41

That’s ok. I appreciate the info! Sometimes you just can’t wait for that brain to catch up. If I always waited, I might never speak! Hmmm, maybe that would be better, though. 😉

So glad that you are feeling better! And I’m a bit jealous of your sock-modeling ability.

I ran my first half marathon with one of my best friends and we didn’t finish last.

Also happy because a friend offered to fix me up with one of her friends, and he seems to be as excited about meeting as I am. (yay!)

    • mistyslaws
      May 19, 2012 @ 18:11:42

Thanks. And I am impressed with this hidden modeling ability as well. Maybe I missed my calling. You think it’s too late to go professional?

Those are really good things. Yay for the marathon. I could never do that. And that is so exciting about the date! Good luck, girl. 🙂

    May 16, 2012 @ 14:41:52

Opals are the stone for October, they are aslo a symbol of love and emotion, also amethyst indicates dignity and wisdom :o) Interestingly, amethyst derives from the greek for ‘without drunkenness’ as the ancient greeks believed that carrying amethyst prevented a person from becoming intoxicated…….not sure how well that would work out in reality though! xxx

    • mistyslaws
      May 19, 2012 @ 18:15:08

Wow, that is so much info. Thanks so much for sharing all that!! 🙂

I never knew that about amethyst and have always loved them, being my birthstone and all. Learn something new all the time. 😉

Maybe I should wear that necklace all the time. Then I can drink all I want all the time. Woo-hoo!! (I’m not sure this information is helpful afterall . . . yikes!).

    May 16, 2012 @ 14:58:40

Wow – where to even start with your awesome loot?! I can see how all of this got you smiling again! I’m reading The Bloggess memoir too (is there a female blogger alive who isn’t?!) – my bestie says the last few chapters are best, so I’m looking forward to finishing!

As for what’s been making me happy lately… I suppose heroin-like cough suppressants don’t count, but honestly, the ‘free pass’ to do NOTHING for two days while sick this week actually made me unbelievably happy. That, Belgian chocolates from my brother and a 2-hour long Glee this week. Yeah, baby!

    • mistyslaws
      May 19, 2012 @ 18:16:48

That is some good stuff right there. It is always nice to have a little break, even if it is because of sickies.

And don’t you mean our brother? 😉

Been a total bummer of a week. Found out I’m being “let go”, and a lot of it has to do with this douchnozzle I work with who has never wanted me here and has been looking to get me canned for over 2 years now. Well, he finally got his wish.

Anywho, my job is working as an informal science educator. I had just gotten the bad news three days before a group of third graders was to come out for a field trip, and I was very definitely feeling crappy and unappreciated. The class, which I have seen a few times before, shows up and I am trying to put on my happy face, but feeling horrible inside.

One of the girls in the class walks up to me and hands me a single white rose. Stunned, I ask her what it was for. She tells me that this week is teacher appreciation week and she wanted to do something nice. :*( I hugged her and excused myself to put the flower in a bottle of water in my office…and took an extra few moments to dry my eyes. That one, sweet gesture really did make my day, and reminded me that although I may not be appreciated by my employer or a certain co-worker, there are others out there that really do. It was awesome.

      May 19, 2012 @ 19:57:21

It is a wonderful feeling, especially when you are feeling down and completely unappreciated (sorry about the job loss, that really blows), to get that one gesture that makes you realize, that behind all the bureaucratic bullshit, what you do actually matter and are appreciated by a few select people. That is priceless. And what a sweet gesture by that little girl. I’m glad you got to experience that when you were feeling so blue. Good luck with the job search!

AWESOME presents. Just. Awesome. And I, also, guffawed out loud at Jenny Lawson’s book.

I am expecting the mother lode next week on my birthday. I’ve been dropping hints all over town that I want an iPad and all… but then…

There is also this little thing that is coming up, and may actually happen because we have the tickets and all that makes me furiously happy and turned my frown upsidown this week. It is so amazing.

Do you remember a few weeks ago, I was all, “I like the ukulele. I should go to Hawaii”? Yeah. I leave on the 5th. To Hawaii. It is all I can do to keep from shouting “OMG OMG I’M GOING TO HAWAII, BITCHES!”

      May 19, 2012 @ 19:59:35

Good luck on getting that iPad, girl. Hope you get showered with gifts for your birthday!

MOTHER CLUCKER! HAWAII??? Wow, I am so freaking excited for you!! That is so exciting. Have a completely radical time. Take lots and lots of pics. I can’t wait to hear all about it . . . in multiple blog posts!! 😉

    May 16, 2012 @ 16:56:38

Oh! Jenny’s book is out! I can’t wait to get my hands on a copy! Mostly because I can’t get internet out in the middle of farmville nowhere (where I live) and so I have to do my internet stalking at work – only Jenny’s blog is against my work’s anti pornography and bad language filters.

Yes, go get the book immediately! You will not be sorry.

I love how much wonderfulness is in this post. Yay! The socks are HAWT. I have the matching tee-shirt. We should totally hit the town dressed in our green gear sometime soon.
I really want that book. *planning trip to Barnes and Noble as I type this*
I love that phone cover (it’s not pink! Whaaaat?) but I sadly do not have the proper phone for said cover.
Glad things are merry and bright around you!

I’m glad you’re feeling “up!” I love those socks!

Hmmmm…something that’s made me happy lately…hmmm. We went and saw The Godfather on the big screen yesterday and I love the 1940s Christmas decorations in that movie. A weird choice, but that’s all I got right now!

    May 16, 2012 @ 21:46:29

There isn’t a damn thing that’s made me happy lately. Have you seen my blog? Neither has anyone else. That’s the first clue that I’m contemplating highly illegal atrocities against humanity.

But you featured your prizes, and that made me smile a little. Maybe life isn’t all bad.

      May 19, 2012 @ 21:27:10

I’m glad you smiled at least. We’ve gotta do something about that blog of yours. I mean, you are a Funny Bitch, dammit! And your blog is freaking hysterical. Hey everyone!! Go to Mandi’s blog. Right now! (All fixed, babe!)

I read The Bloggess’ book. I actually went to New York and bought it and asked her to sign it for me, which is pretty dedicated since I live in Sydney (and that book was, of course, my sole motivation).

It is the most hilarious book ever! Meeting Jenny was the most exciting thing to ever happen to me and I came away showing off my new book to everyone. Then I read it all in one sitting (on the plane) and laughed til I cried and in some parts cried til I laughed. And then I gave it to my husband to share the happy with him.

You made out like a bandit! Well done!

I pick 3. The thing that’s made me happiest lately has been a good stretch of incredible weather. After months of rain and dark, we’ve finally had about 12 days without a drop of rain but instead, lots and lots of sunshine. The forecast is calling for an end to the dry spell on Sunday. Boo.

    • mistyslaws
      May 19, 2012 @ 21:37:28

Yay for great weather!! It is such a relief to finally get some sunshine after all that gloom. Nothing like that to lift your spirits. Hope you don’t get the rain they are calling for tomorrow.

I follow your blog but I’m not a WordPress user so I don’t technically “Follow” your blog if you know what I mean. But I liked your Facebook page and I’m telling you what makes me happy. As soon as I think of something, it’s all yours.

If I win, I’ll have to decide between the prizes because while i don’t have an iphone, my wife does. I have to decide to use my “one wish” on her or not.

And for my happy thought, I’m going with I’m happy that my wife takes care of all the other crap while I get to coach my son’s little league team. And days off work make me happy. On the rare occasion I get them. I’m also happy that your getting back to being happy.

And you’ll be happy because I’m shutting up now.

Oh man. Decisions decisions. Don’t worry, I won’t tell if you pick the awesome pad for yourself. 😉

Then again, she is taking care of everything while you get to coach, so . . . Just saying.
